The purpose of the
Allegan
County
Resource Development Committee is to combat the causes and effects of human suffering
and poverty in
Allegan County, Michigan
.
On June 11,
1968, the Allegan County Board of Supervisors, now the
County
Commissioners
, designated the Allegan County Resource Development Committee, Inc. (ACRDC) as
the Community Action Agency for
Allegan County
under the provision of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, as amended in 1967. The Economic Opportunity Act’s purpose
was to mobilize the human and financial resources
of the Nation to combat poverty in the
United States
. As a
Community Action Agency, ACRDC was entitled to receive Federal funds from the Community
Services Administration to provide services to the residents of
Allegan County
.
Almost 40 years later, ACRDC is still functioning as the Community Action Agency
for
Allegan County
. ACRDC has a long history of offering
various types of services to families struggling with poverty.
Some examples include employment assistance programs (Now Michigan Works)
the Head Start pre-school program, the Weatherization program, Utility Assistance
payments, housing programs, and now various services for seniors.
ACRDC has worked, via its Board of Directors, diligently and quietly for
years serving the neediest residents in
Allegan County
.
Currently ACRDC manages a budget of approximately $4.5 million and employs 120
full and part-time individuals, and is fortunate enough to receive over 40,000 hours
of volunteer time from committed individuals who help us “combat the causes and
effects of human suffering and poverty in
Allegan County
.”
ACRDC is a private, non-profit agency governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. One third of the Board of Directors
membership is made up of citizens from the low-income community;
one third of the membership is public officials, and; one third of the members are
from the private sector.
The Executive Director is Edward Hillary.
